Mages of Rhean
Rules for Specialists
A specialized mage has devoted his life to the study of a single field of magic. While he by necessity
will learn something of other schools of magic, his training in that one school goes far beyond any general mage's.
Because of this, specialists receive the following benefits and penalties:
- A specialist receives a +15% to his chance to learn spells within his specialty; conversely, he receives a -15%
to his chance to learn spells from other schools.
- A specialist may make a new attempt to learn a spell he has previously failed to understand at each new level,
provided he still has a copy of the spell.
- A specialist has access to certain spells at a lower level than non-specialists, and may
have access to spells not allowed to non-specialists (there are a few spells that only generalists can learn, however).
- A specialist has an increased chance of success at magical research in his chosen field,
and a decreased chance in all others.
- A specialist learns to inscribe spells in a magical script unique to each specialty.
- A specialist requires slightly more experience to advance in level as compared to generalists.
These characteristics are shared by all specialties. In addition, certain schools may have individual benefits and hindrances.
Specialist schools, as the Rheen assembly lists them, include:
- Abjurors
- Artificers
- Conjurors
- Diviners
- Enchanters
- Illusionists
- Invokers
- Necromancers
Life as a Mage
Life as a mage is mostly dependent upon where the mage lives. In some areas, mages are feared and hated;
in others they are respected members of society. Nearly every land, however, acknowledges the power mages wield.
Rhe - Mages are one of three power groups Rheen society is built around. All mages are citizens,
and are generally treated with great deference by the common man.
Relnin - While it is not a crime to be a mage in the Sword Kingdom, the practice of magic is not well-tolerated.
Mages are thought to be spies and agents of either Rhe or the Dysnarkyl, and are blamed for many accidents and disasters.
Lindon - Much like Relnin, Lindon views mages with great suspicion. However, elvish mages are actually
beloved; they are seen as a counter to the threat of evil magic from the south.
Destend - Although there is strong undercurrent of Yarrin sentiment in the City,
the Allitoian nobles are pragmatic enough to seize an advantage when they can. Thus, there are several mages in Destend;
although they do not openly advertise their skills, the Triads and many merchants can contact them (often through the Moonstars).
