Guilds and Societies of Rhean

There are many organizations, secret societies, guilds, and other groups throughout Rhean. This list attempts to feature some of the best-known, most-feared, or otherwise most-noteworthy of these groups. Some are here because of uniqueness; for example, there are hundreds of mercenary guilds and companies, but only one is a large company of dwarves, and so the Iron Fist is mentioned here. Inclusion does not mean the group has ulterior motives or an evil plot to take over the world; exclusion does not mean the group is unimportant.

The Dysnarkyl

The Dysnarkyl is both an organization and a place: Doom Keep, a place of great evil near the Bardlands. It is rumored that mages of Rhe, fleeing some crime, founded the keep to practice their forbidden rites. Since its founding, they have amassed an army, gained control of some goblin tribes, bred hideous monstrosities, and so damaged the region that it is now known as the Twisted Land. Their goals seem to be the destruction of the Bardlands and Relnin, as both of these nations are completely opposed to these fell lords. In addition to mages, the lords include assasins, fighting men, and priests.

The Iron Fist

This group of dwarves is something of a puzzle. It is well-known that dwarves rarely work as mercenaries, at least for other races. But this mercenary company is known throughout the west for being one of the best companies for seige warfare and combat engineering. It is not known whether they work for one of the dwarven kings, or if they are entirely free-lance. What is known is that they are good, trustworthy...and expensive.

Navigators

The Navigators are a mysterious guild. They claim to know the waters of the Dragon, Shining, and Enclosed Seas better than any others, and this reputation is deserved enough that they can command high prices to sail with trading vessels. In particular, almost all vessels sailing the straits between the Shining Sea and the Sea of Allitoi and Enclosed Sea carry a Navigator. Despite their straightforward purpose, Navigators guard their secrets jealously. No one outside of the Guild knows the location of their main hall (they have chapter houses in many port cities), and no one can confirm the rumors that they can speak to dolphins and other sea creatures. Besides that, there is the matter of how they know the weather so well, how they find favorable winds, and their uncanny knowledge of the coasts and seaways, even without charts before them. Whatever the truth, they provide an invaluable service...and they know it.

The Survivors

The Survivors are a long-lived band whose members are devoted to protection of innocents. In particular, they rescue people from dangerous situations, including would-be heroes trying to fight the evils of Rhean. Most of their members were once rescued by older Survivors themselves. It is believed the group may have been founded in the Bardlands, as the current leader, the woodsman Alethor, is known to be from that troubled area. Other members include the bard Laurana, a Star Mage, an Eagle Knight, and many others. Members of the group travel widely, and it is actually fairly rare to find the entire membership in one place.
